World-famous Zimbabwean author, Tsitsi Dangarembga in Tallinn Summer School

One of the guest lecturers of Tallinn University’s Summer School (July 14-31) is Tsitsi Dangarembga, a Zimbabwean author and filmmaker, whose novel “Nervous Conditions” is considered among the ten most important works of the 20th century’s African literature.

One of the guest lecturers of Tallinn University’s Summer School (July 14-31) is Tsitsi Dangarembga, a Zimbabwean author and filmmaker, whose novel “Nervous Conditions” is considered among the ten most important works of the 20th century’s African literature.

Dangarembga was born in Zimbabwe in 1959 and spent some of her formative years in England. Her most well-known works are “Nervous Conditions” (1988) and “The Book of Not: A Sequel to Nervous Conditions” (2006). She has also written short stories and plays. The writer, who has studied filmmaking in Berlin, has created a scenario for the film “Neria” (1993) and is the director of the film “Everyone´s Child” (1996). She has taught creative writing in Africa and Asia and is presently the director of the Institute of Creative Arts for Progress in Africa (ICAPA).

This year, the Tallinn Summer School course “Creative Writing in English” focuses on a unique form of writing – writing for the screen. The course is titled “Adapting your story; writing a big- screen screenplay based on short prose” and takes place in the form of workshops.

The Creative Writing course has been in the summer school programme since 2009 and focuses on a different genre every year, its purpose being the development of writing competence.

Tsitsi Dangarembga´s short films will be shown on July 29 at the Summer School film evening.

In addition to “Creative Writing in English”, Tallinn Summer School’s participants have the possibility to choose between 19 other courses. TSS offers language courses and creative workshops; courses in humanities, social sciences, educational sciences, natural sciences and IT. The participants also have a change to see Tallinn’s social and cultural life during the Summer School. This yeas TSS takes place for the ninth time and will be bigger than ever. The estimated number of participants is 350 and they come from more than 50 different countries. The number is not yet fixed, as the registration is still open for some of the courses.
