Application deadlines and late applications

When is the application deadline?

Our application deadlines are based on citizenship and residency status in Estonia. You can find all the deadlines here. All documents, including proof of English proficiency and programme-specific requirements, must be submitted and fulfilled by the application deadline. 
 

Is it possible to apply after the application deadline?

No, we do not accept late applications. You are welcome to apply again next time.

Can I apply for spring semester?

Only some PhD programmes and the Interaction Design programme accept students for the spring semester. Application deadlines can be found here. All Bachelor’s and other Master’s programmes have only one intake per year, for the autumn semester.

All applications must be submitted through our , we do not accept any documents sent via email.

Do I have to pay an application fee?

Yes. Most applicants are required to pay an application fee of 100 euros. Information about exemptions from the application fee is available on our website. The list is exhaustive. 

I will receive my final diploma after the application deadline. What should I do?

Please upload your latest study results and your current educational institution to your application.

Applicants who are still studying by the application deadline, are granted an extension until 1 July 2026 to submit their final educational documents. If your documents are not originally in English, then you need to take into account the time it would take to get them translated.

If according to our country-specific requirements your educational institution is required to send us hard copies of your documents, then they also need to reach us by the indicated deadline.

Please note that it is not possible to grant any additional extensions, so please make sure you will be able to meet the deadline before applying. 

Where can I find the programmes offered for international students?

Where can I see the courses offered on each study programme?

You can see the exact courses taught on each programme on the . From the list on the left, choose Study programmes, then choose the academic unit and the specific programme. By clicking View more you can find all the offered modules and courses.

Eligibility

I will turn 18 years old after the start of the semester. Can I still apply?

As of 2021, we do not admit any minors to any of our study programmes. An exception can be made only in case one of your parents accompanies you to Estonia and stays with you until you turn 18 years old. If it is possible for you and one of your parents to comply with this requirement then please contact us and we will inform you of the steps you are required to take.  
 

Is there a maximum age limit?

No, we do not have any maximum age limit for applicants.
 

I have a study gap. Does it affect applying?

No, a study gap does not affect your application as long as all other requirements are met.

Can I apply as a transfer student?

It is not possible to apply as a transfer student. Students who wish to transfer their studies must first apply in the same way as all other applicants, based on their previously acquired education. The transfer of credits can be negotiated once you are accepted as a degree student. However, it cannot be confirmed beforehand if the study outcomes that you have already acquired are compatible with the ones offered at Tallinn University, so it is possible that not many credits can be transferred.
 

“At least 60% of the possible maximum results are expected.” What does it mean?

The 60% requirement means that your CGPA must exceed the 60% threshold. It is calculated based on the CGPA presented in the graduation documents in accordance with the grading system in your previous educational institution.

 

Documents

Am I eligible to apply with the educational documents from my home country?

You can see our country-specific requirements here. If there is no country-specific page for your home country, a good indication of your eligibility for higher education in Estonia is whether you have access to higher education in your home country.

The final assessment of your educational documents will be made by the university’s admission specialists. The university has the right to make inquiries, use different databases, and institutions, as well as submit documents certifying education to the Estonian ENIC/NARIC for the purpose of assessing your obtained qualification(s). The evaluation process may take up to five weeks and is done after you have received your conditional acceptance.
 

Can I submit photos of my documents?

No, photos are not accepted. You must provide high-quality scans of your documents. Please note that unclear or low-quality scans may result in your application being rejected.

When do I have to send documents by post?

The final assessment of your educational documents is carried out by the university’s admission specialists after you have received conditional acceptance. If you are required to send documents, you will be individually instructed to do so in the feedback provided through DreamApply. Please do not send any documents unless specifically requested.

If I am asked to submit documents through my previous educational institution, can anyone from the institution send them?

No, please never send your original documents. Documents submitted for admission will not be returned. If you are requested to send documents by post after receiving conditional acceptance, you must send certified copies of your educational documents. Copies, notarised/certified copies, and notarised/certified translations of submitted documents will not be returned. More information can be found here.

English language requirements

Do I need to prove my English language proficiency?

Yes. All information about language requirements, including minimum test scores, is available here

Can I submit my English certificate after the application deadline?

No. All required documents, including proof of English proficiency, need to be submitted by the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer any extensions, therefore, we recommend you prepare for this well in advance and take an international English exam before the application period. 

Do you accept Duolingo or Medium of Instruction Certificate as proof of English?

My previous studies were fully in English. Am I exempt from submitting separate proof of English proficiency?

Only applicants who have completed their previous levels of education or their previous studies fully in English in the United States, Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Switzerland or the EU/EEA countries (attested proof from the previous educational institution required), will be exempted from submitting an international language test as a proof of their English proficiency.

My English language skills do not meet the minimum entry requirements. Do you offer any preparatory language programmes?

No, we do not offer any such programmes. 

Admission exams
 

When are the admission examinations taking place?

Admission exams take place several times during the application period, except for joint programmes and PhD programmes. You will be contacted by the academic unit once your application has been reviewed by the admission committee of your chosen programme. 
 

Do I have to come to Estonia for the admission examinations?

Generally, applicants are not required to travel to Estonia for the admission exam. The admission exam usually consists of a motivation letter or a creative portfolio (depends on the programme) and a video interview. However, occasionally, applicants from neighbouring countries may be asked to come to Estonia.
 

Where can I find information about the admission exam?

The admission exam content, assessment criteria, and the weighting of each component in the total result are published on the programme’s website.

Admission results and deferral

When do I find out if I am admitted?

Once you have successfully passed your admission exam and fulfilled the requirements of your conditional acceptance, you will receive your final acceptance letter. Non-EU/EEA citizens are required to pay the first semester's tuition fee before their final acceptance. 
 

What can I do if I believe an admission decision violates my rights?

You may contest the result of a speciality-specific admission exam or part of it by submitting a written appeal within three working days after the publication of the exam results. Other admission-related decisions or procedures may also be appealed within three working days from the publication date of the decision or the date the procedure took place. Can I defer the start date of my studies?

No, unfortunately, that is not possible. You need to commence your studies in the intake you apply to. If you are unable to do so, then you need to reapply for another intake. 
 

Finances (application fee, tuition fee, scholarships, cost of living)
 

How much is the application fee? Can I wave the application fee?

How much is tuition?

You can find the tuition fees for our Bachelor's and Master's programmes here. PhD programmes are free of charge.
 

When do I have to pay the tuition fees?

Non-EU/EEA citizens must pay the tuition fee for the first semester once they have fulfilled the requirements of their conditional acceptance. After this, the final offer is issued along with the final acceptance letter. The following semesters are paid according to the payment plan chosen when signing the study contract. 

EU/EEA citizens make their first tuition fee payment in the autumn semester according to the payment plan chosen when signing the study contract (except applicants applying to the Interaction Design MSc programme, who will receive an invoice to pay the tuition fee for the first semester after the positive evaluation results of their previous education).

Are there any study allowances or scholarships?

Please note that it is not possible to apply for most scholarships and allowances before your final acceptance. It is also not possible in most cases to waive the first semester's tuition fee payment requirement for non-EU/EEA citizens, so please make sure you are financially prepared for studies abroad.

Accommodation

What accommodation options are available?

We have a dormitory for international students, located a 3-minute walk away from our campus. However, the number of places is limited and therefore, we recommend students look into private accommodation options. You can read more about both options here

When do I get my Acceptance Letter?

The acceptance letter is issued after the candidate’s previous education has been positively evaluated and non-EU applicants to Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes have paid the first-semester tuition fee. 

All candidates applying to the Interaction Design programme must pay the first-semester tuition fee before receiving the acceptance letter.

I need a visa to come to Estonia, but there is no Estonian embassy in my country. What should I do?

When do I need to arrive in Estonia?

The new academic year begins with Orientation Week for international students, usually held in the last week of August. Please check the exact dates on the academic calendar. All international students must arrive by the first day of Orientation Week.

How do I apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) for study?

Working during studies

Can I work during my studies and where can I find a job?

Yes, you can. TRP for study holders are also allowed to work as long as it does not interfere with their studies. Students holding a temporary residence permit must study full-time. More information about working alongside your studies can be found here

Exceptions for Ukrainian candidates

Do you have any exceptions for Ukrainian candidates?

Ukrainian candidates do not have to pay an application fee. If they do not have a valid proof of English B2 certificate, they can take the  English test of Tallinn University to prove their language proficiency.
