XII Postgrad Summer School in Humanities: Urban Youth and Social Acceleration
Add to calendar
iCal calendarThe XII Postgraduate Summer School in Humanities: Urban Youth and Social Acceleration takes place in Tallinn University, 21-25 July 2014.
Description
What can young people teach us? The aim of this summer school is to explore and frame the situational tactics of adaptation of young people in late-modernity. Through a series of workshops, lectures and discussions, the summer school will provide analytical tools to examine the role of youth in social transformations and their negotiations of precarity, acceleration and technological changes. These dynamics will be studied by localising them in urban settings. An embedded analysis of youth practices is here favoured, seeing how young people configure social order and articulate cultural significance. By the end of the program, students will have gained a solid theoretical framework as well as access to diverse case studies. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to present their own work, getting feedback from established researchers, activists and peer students.
Participants
We invite M.A. and PhD students interested in youth cultures, urban studies, and social acceleration to participate in the course. As English is the language of instruction at the summer school, participants should have at least an intermediate level of English. Students are expected to do some preparatory reading in order to participate in the seminars and workshops. They also have an option (not compulsory) to present their own research during student colloquia. If you wish to present a paper, please send a 300-word abstract to Teet Teinemaa. Upon full participation and giving a presentation, students will be awarded 5 ECTS points. To apply, please register first here and then send your CV to Teet Teinemaa. If there should be more applicants than the course can accept, the choice will be made based on the CVs and (where applicable) on the interest of the presentation abstracts provided. The results will be announced no later than on May 31st.
Course fee
Non-refundable registration fee: 80 EUR (members of The Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts are exempt from the registration fee).
