The next lecture of Studia Generalia entitled „Ethical Dilemmas of
Humanitarian Action: Humanitarian Responses to Conflict and Forced
Migration in Burma/Myanmar and Beyond“ will be delivered by Alexander
Horstmann. The lecture takes place on Wednesday, October 20 at 16:00
in Room S-318 (TU Silva building, Narva Road 29). The lecture will be in
English. The lecture will discuss the political responses and media coverage
of the political transformation and crisis in Burma/Myanmar. With the
forthcoming elections in Burma/Myanmar, a debate has arisen about how the
world should respond to the political crisis, human rights violations and
internal displacement in Myanmar/Burma. The author will use examples from
his fieldwork  to illustrate how Christian Humanitarian organizations
and the media identify with the fate of Christian ethnic minorities and
victims of forced displacement. The lecture will discuss the consequences
and ethical dilemmas of humanitarian action and the sanctions on the
Burmese government. These sanctions will also be compared with other recent
sanctions. The lecture will be limited to the question of political
boundaries of protection and humanitarian action and the question of the
neutrality of the humanitarian donors. Alexander Horstmann is a research
fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic
Diversity in Göttingen, Germany. His work on regional identity processes,
social change, political development, conflict and the dynamics of religion
in Burma/Myanmar has been widely published. He is the author and editor of
three books and numerous articles. One of his latest books is entitled “
Centering the Margin: Action and Narrative in Southeast Asian border
regions ” (Oxford and New York: Berghahn). He is also the author of a
