On October 30th 2015, Tallinn University Estonian Institute for Population Studies, along with Population Europe, University of Latvia and Vytautas Magnus Kaunas University host the seminar “Convergence and Divergence in Health and Life Expectancy in the Three Baltic Countries: Policy Implications and Challenges,” in which the problems, development and trends in Baltic states’ health and life expectancy will be discussed.

The head of the TU Estonian Institute for Population Studies Luule Sakkeus says the goal of the seminar is to map potential population political methods to cure said trends: “The life expectancy and health in Estonia and the other Baltic States has developed rapidly in the past years, but we are still stragglers compared to the rest of Europe. The Riga debate-seminar will host nearly 60 researchers, policy formers and NGO representatives to also talk about possible methods and next steps.”

The seminar will begin with four keynote speeches, which give an overview of the development of health and life expectancy in the Baltics, the effect of the social system and welfare states on health and the possible political actions. This will be followed by a panel, in which the participants will discuss the subject from a policies perspective.
