Turning the Tables: The Cultural Legacy of the Suffragettes
by Sheelagh Colclough (Ireland)

What is the cultural legacy of the Suffragettes? In this talk, Sheelagh Colclough (author of ‘Turning the Tables: Repertoires of Agency and Resistance’ in the edited volume Suffragette Legacy) considers the influence of the Suffragettes on how subsequent feminist social movements utilized culture for social change. Focusing on examples from the birthplace of the Women’s Social and Political Union (Manchester, England), this raucous journey of disobedient women will take us from the Northern Women’s Liberation Rock Band to the post-punk agitprop of Linder Sterling, detouring through the zine City Fun. This event encourages an exchange of ideas about contemporary examples and will include an opportunity to view some recently published feminist zines from Manchester. Viva la revolution!

Sheelagh Colclough is a Belfast based multi disciplinary artist who has 15 years of experience in collaborative arts practice: arts education and engagement, production, programming and research. She has been part of the outreach and education team for the Turner Prize 2013, Derry-Londonderry UK City of Culture. In recent years she has exhibited with Golden Thread and PS² galleries in Belfast and has programmed and participated in a series of collaborative practice events for Ulster University, Belfast. She completed a collaborative artists residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre with The Performance Corporation, Dublin, 2015 and will be in residence with IZOLYATSIA, Ukraine, July 2016.

The talk will be held in English. Free entrance.
