iCal calendarThe 25th Anniversary Conference of Estonian Institute of Humanities titled "Estonia's Humane Future" takes place on 11 November from 10 a.m to 4 p.m in Tallinn University's Tallinn Hall.
Do humanities have a future in Estonia? Does Estonia have a future without humanities? Is the science of tomorrow the derivative of yesterday? Does a nation-state need a national culture? What is the humane measure in science, environment, society?
The answers to these and many other questions will be sought at the conference "Estonia's Humane Future". "Where is the Estonian Nokia?" President Lennart Meri once asked, and the Estonian media, visionaries and other bright minds started to look for the Estonian Nokia together. "Where is the Finnish Nokia now?" asks Prof Mihhail Lotman, one of the initiators of the conference. He continues, "History does not know any examples of a successful and innovative society, where the so-called "soft sciences" are laid aside. On the contrary: All the known revolutions in science and engineering have humane sources. European history is no exception: The break-through in engineering during the renaissance stemmed from a humanitarian culture and a humane ideology."
The conference will be opened by the Director of EIH Hannes Palang; Mart Kalm, Tiina Kirss, Krista Kodres, Marju Lauristin, Anne Lill, Mihhail Lotman, Ülar Ploom, Rein Raud, Jaan Ross and Urmas Sutrop will have presentations. A discussion will follow the presentations. The conference will be moderated by Marek Tamm.
The birthday party will continue later in the evening at the NO99 café.
