FilmEU European University Alliance Receives €12.8 Million Funding from the European Commission
European Film and Media Arts education and research continues to create a future that is even more open, innovative and international.

On the 3rd of July, the European Commission confirmed significant further funding of 12.8 million euros to in order to continue and widen its success and impact in the internationalisation of education, research, innovation and industrial cooperation in the Film and Media Arts. FilmEU+ will support an expanded alliance from four to eight universities and over 60 diverse organisations across Europe. FilmEU+ starts in November 2023 immediately after FilmEU finishes and continues to October 2027.
Andres Jõesaar, Head of the Media and Communication at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts school (TLU BFM) at Tallinn University has been leading the Estonian side of FilmEU for the last few years and explains that FilmEU’s focus has been on aligning, improving and delivering the best of Film and Media Arts education and research across Europe: “FilmEU enables universities to do things better together through an alliance that would not be possible to do alone by sharing resources, best practice, cool ideas and talent. For example, our shared study programmes and events mean that students and staff can visit and participate online, study, and do collaborative research. We want them to be energised and most of all be inspired by working and studying at partner universities and establishing meaningful and life changing partnerships and develop new pathways towards stronger collaborations with industry.”
, Lecturer in Film Studies at TLU BFM and the Estonian lead for FilmEU+, says that FilmEU+ will build on the success and achievements of what has been achieved so far in FilmEU: “FilmEU+ is all about imagining and changing the future. Our world is constantly surrounded and shaped by different audio visual imagery and this makes Film and Media Arts education and research especially important in contributing to significant changes in society. Film and the Media Arts is a very powerful medium for sharing and forming ideas, emotions and knowledge.”
Teinemaa emphasises that FilmEU+’s focus lies in developing and elevating the value and impact of artistic research and its outputs. According to the FilmEU Project Development Manager the alliance will also continue to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurial practice by inviting the Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries to work both with students and staff. “We will work with society by improving Film and Media Education literacy and production by enabling green and sustainable practice and targeting and collaborating with those less privileged.”
Tallinn University will work and engage with industry and citizens through exhibitions and events and enable innovation through competitions and create spaces that stimulate and accelerate the imagination. “This will allow for radical creativity and inspiration to occur especially when working with industry and trying to solve and tackle challenging issues, the so-called wicked problems”.
Tõnu Viik, rector of Tallinn University is very proud of FilmEU’s successes: “FilmEU provides examples of how universities can cooperate in order to be more inclusive and open and face the challenges of today’s society. FilmEU+ will not only continue to support and value creativity through artistic research and practice, but it will continue to stand for sustainable development, societal cooperation and intelligent lifestyle”.
The original alliance of four institutions will be expanded to a formidable and diverse group of eight leading Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and other organisations across Europe. The Alliance is led by from Portugal and includes original alliance members in Belgium, - Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology in Ireland and TLU - Tallinn University, in Estonia (through the Baltic Film, Media and Arts school). FilmEU+ welcomes new members - Academy of Performing Arts in Slovakia, - The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, University College in Denmark, and (National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts) - “Krustyo Sarafov” in Bulgaria.
FilmEU is a European University Alliance dedicated to promoting high-level education, innovation, and research activities in the multidisciplinary field of Film and Media Arts. With a consortium of eight leading Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from across Europe, FilmEU aims to consolidate Europe's significant role as a world leader in the cultural and creative industries.
FilmEU through FilmEU+ will receive an additional through Erasmus and the starting from November 2023 to October 2027.
FilmEU is part of a larger initiative of working on different projects and programmes to stimulate cooperation across borders and disciplines in the European Education Area.
