The project’s kick-off event will take place on 10–11 October 2024 at Tallinn University’s Mare building and the Academic Library’s Centre for Digitisation. Over two days, scholars from across Europe will gather to discuss cutting-edge approaches to preserving and utilising digital cultural heritage.

Key sessions include a welcome presentation by Marek Tamm, Professor of Cultural History at TLU and leader of the project, along with the launch of the DIGHT-Net website. Welcoming remarks will be delivered remotely by David Monteiro, the European Commission Project Officer. The Work Package leaders will present the main aims and activities of the project. On the second day, Indrek Ibrus, Professor of Media Innovation at TLU, will deliver a keynote lecture on the role of knowledge graphs in studying and creating culture. A panel of junior researchers will present innovative perspectives on topics such as digitising and decolonising cultural heritage, spatial cultural data analysis, and AI-generated imagery.

DIGHT-Net workshop, “New Trends in Digital Culture Studies”, will take place on 12 October 2024 at Tallinn University. This workshop will provide a unique opportunity for scholars and researchers to explore emerging themes and methods in digital culture studies.

The day will begin with opening remarks at 11:00, followed by a keynote presentation by Professor Jussi Parikka (Aarhus University, Denmark / FAMU, Prague), titled “Ecology in Digital Culture, or: What the Planetary Scale Crisis Means for Our Methods?”. Further highlights include an introduction to new trends in digital culture studies presented by Mila Oiva, Petri Paju, and Hannu Salmi, all from the University of Turku, and a special invited talk by Professor Elizabeth Yakel (University of Michigan) on the topic of “Digital Cultural Heritage: Repair, Respect, Relationship”. The day will conclude with a general discussion and synthesis session, addressing challenges for the future of the DIGHT-Net project.

DIGHT-Net project on 13 October 2024 at Tallinn University will focus on innovative approaches to digital cultural heritage, bridging the fields of semiotics and memory studies. This event will offer fresh perspectives on how we understand and engage with archives and memory in the age of digital culture. It offers an excellent opportunity to explore how semiotic approaches can enrich our understanding of digital cultural heritage and its interaction with memory in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
