The next public lecture of Studia Generalia entitled "Protein Aggregation
in Humans and Spiders" will be delivered by Professor Jan Johansson. The
lecture will take place in the auditorium M-218 (TU Mare building,
Uus-Sadama 5) on Thursday, February 2 at 16:00. Protein aggregation
into fibrils underlies a growing number of diseases, but can also be
harnessed for useful purposes, e.g.in spider silk. This lecture will
describe two contrasting examples: spider silk proteins (spidroins) which
have low predicted abilities to aggregate, but form extremely stable silk
fibres, and a trans-membrane segment of lung surfactant protein C which has
the highest possible aggregation propensity, but under normal circumstances
is prevented from forming amyloid by a recently discovered helper
protein.Professor Johansson earned his PhD at the Karolinska Institute in
1991. He has been Professor of Medical Biochemistry since 2002. He has been
a senior researcher in Tallinn University since 2010.Studia Generalia is a
series of public lectures delivered by the teachers, researchers and
visiting lecturers of TU. Anyone who enters the University building can
listen to what prominent thinkers have to say on current topics that affect
society, and also participate in the discussion. The lectures are held once
a month on Thursdays. Students can obtain two credits after participating
in the whole series. Participation is free of charge. In order to watch
past lectures, please visit the Tallinn Virtual University.Lectures of
Studia Generalia at Tallinn University are part of the programme for the
Year of Science in Estonia. For further information please contact:Kaie
