The next public lecture of Studia Generalia entitled "Know Thyself! – Or
Geographers and the Human Condition" will be delivered by Professor Edmunds
Bunkše. The lecture will take place in the auditorium M-218 (TU Mare
building, Uus-Sadama 5) on Wednesday, 15 February at 16:00.Edmunds Bunkše,
Professor Emeritus of the University of Delaware and a Visiting Professor
at the University of Latvia, will talk about humanistic geography in his
lecture, thus contributing to the celebration of the Month of Geography at
Tallinn University. The lecture will be followed by the presentation of his
book entitled "Geography and the Art of Life", also in room M-218. This
book was translated into Estonian by Martin Küttim, MA student of
Geo-ecology at Tallinn University, and edited by Helen Sooväli-Sepping,
senior researcher of Cultural Geography at Tallinn University, and Triin
Kaalep.Professor Bunkše comments on his lecture, "In developing the
poetics of inhabited space, Gaston Bachelard stressed the orientation of
thoughts and daydreams toward general values instead of developing explicit
plans or formulae. In discussing humanistic geography I wish to touch on
the following orientations: Know thyself! - The world as a mirror -
Landscapes within - Sharing with others the wonders of landscapes. Since
its inception by the ancient Greeks, geography has been concerned with
knowing the world but not with contributing to self-knowledge. This has
changed since the 1960s. It was a change that helped me to develop
humanities geography courses and ultimately to realize a life-long dream of
becoming a writer and to share geographic sensibilities with
people."Professor Bunkše defended his PhD in Geography at the University
of California, Berkeley. He has taught in the UK and Latvia. He holds an
honorary PhD from the University of Latvia.Studia Generalia is a series of
public lectures delivered by the teachers, researchers and visiting
lecturers of TU. Anyone who enters the University building can listen to
what prominent thinkers have to say on current topics that affect society,
and also participate in the discussion. Students can obtain two credits
