Germany seems to be different. Many people – Germans and foreigners alike
– feel that German history has overshadowed the country for too long, and
that it is time for Germany to "return to normality". Professor Bernd
Wegner, Helmut-Schmidt University, Germany, will deliver a public lecture
in which he analyses Germany within the framework of European history in
the 20th century. The lecture will be held in the Tallinn University
Institute of History (Rüütli St 10, auditorium 1) on Thursday, September
8 at 16:00.In his lecture entitled "Germany and Europe in the 20th
Century", Professor Wegner will introduce five theses which will contribute
to a better understanding of Germany’s present role in Europe. The most
general conclusion of Professor Wegner is that Germany is indeed different.
However, this fact should be accepted rather than trying to eliminate
history.Bernd Wegner was born in 1949 in Oberhausen in Western Germany. In
1995 he joined the Bundeswehr University in Hamburg (now known as Helmut
Schmidt University) where, in 1997 he was appointed the Chair for
Modern German and West European History. He studied History, Philosophy and
Political Science at the Universities of Tübingen, Vienna and Hamburg,
where he earned his PhD in 1980 with a study on the history of the
Waffen-SS. In 1979/80 he spent a year as a Volkswagen Research Fellow at
St. Antony’s College in Oxford (UK), before joining the
Militärgeschichtliche Forschungsamt (Military History Research
Institute) in Freiburg (Germany) as a permanent Senior Fellow. During
his years in Freiburg he contributed to an extensive book series entitled
"Germany and the Second World War" ("Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite
Weltkrieg"). He has also worked as a part-time lecturer at Freiburg
University, and in 1990/91 was a visiting fellow at Greifswald
University (East Germany). In 1995, he was granted habilitation at the
University of Hamburg with a study on Hitler’s grand strategy and
warfare. Bernd Wegner and his Finnish wife have been married since
