The second public lecture of Studia Generalia entitled "Masculinities in US
Cable Dramas: Feminism after the New Man" will be delivered by professor
Amanda Lotz. The lecture will take place in the auditorium M218 (TU Mare
building, Uus-Sadama 5) on October 24 at 16:00. This talk draws on Lotz鈥檚
forthcoming book "Cable Guys: Television and American Masculinities in the
21st Century", in which she examines what the protagonists and stories of
series such as "Breaking Bad", "Rescue Me", "Hung", "The Shield", "Sons of
Anarchy", "Entourage", "Dexter", "Men of a Certain Age" and "Nip/Tuck"
indicate about contemporary masculinities. These series, along with several
others, emerged in the first decade of the 21st century and varied previous
storytelling norms by centering their narratives on the whole life of their
male characters and depicted these protagonists as deeply flawed. Lotz
explores the socio-historical and industrial contexts that produce these
characters and analyzes how the gender politics of these series indicate
post-second-wave struggles by men negotiating between feminist and
patriarchal masculinities.Amanda D. Lotz is an associate professor of
Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of
"The Television Will Be Revolutionized" (New York University Press, 2007)
and "Redesigning Women: Television After the Network Era" (University of
Illinois Press, 2006), and editor of "Beyond Prime Time: Television
Programming in the Post-Network Era" (Routledge, 2009). She is co-author,
with Timothy Havens, of "Understanding Media Industries" (Oxford University
Press, 2011) and, with Jonathan Gray, of "Television Studies" (Polity,
2011). She has published articles in Critical Studies in Media
Communication, Feminist Media Studies, Media, Culture & Society,
Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture,
