On Thursday, March 25th, the third spring term lecture of Studia Generalia
at Tallinn University will be delivered by professor John Hartley from the
Queensland University of Technology (Australia). Prof. Hartley is one of
the world鈥檚 leading thinkers in the fields of creative industries and
cultural studies. The lecture will be held in room M-225, TU Mare building
at 16:00.Prof Hartley, Research Director of the Centre of Excellence in
Creative Industries and Innovation at the Queensland University of
Technology, has written twenty books on cultural studies, media and
creative industries. His Studia Generalia at Tallinn University will focus
directly on integration of cultural and innovation studies, based on the
need to establish a better understanding of modern creative industry. He
suggests that such integration will provide a new approach which Hartley
and his colleagues have termed Cultural Science.John Hartley鈥檚 visit to
Estonia is especially significant since he is one of the few modern
mainstream leaders in cultural studies who takes an avid interest in Yuri
Lotman鈥檚 work and philosophy. In his work, Hartley has updated and
expanded upon Lotman鈥檚 theories through applying them in his studies of
modern media phenomena 鈥 so much so that a Finnish journal has called him
鈥渁 Yuri Lotman on rollerblades鈥.John Hartley鈥檚 lecture is an
introduction to the Baltic Film and Media School鈥檚 conference
鈥淓ducational Challenge: Innovation in Creative Industries鈥.More
