A series of seminars "Inimkond/Humankind. Current Issues in Anthropology
and Beyond" will be held every fortnight on Wednesdays from 18:00–20:00.
The first seminar in the series will be held in the auditorium N315
(Tallinn University Nova building) on 21 November 2012.This seminar series
features speakers from anthropology and related fields, and fosters
discussion of their research with a trans-disciplinary audience. It aims to
contribute to the culture of academic scholarship and debate at Tallinn
University. Speakers include local researchers as well as guests from a
variety of disciplinary backgrounds including those with different
interpretations of anthropological theory and methodology. Presentations in
the seminar series will be of particular interest to staff and students in
anthropology, cultural theory, sociology, and history. The speaker for the
first seminar on 21 November will be Dr Carlo Cubero from Tallinn
University, who will screen a short film (20 min.) and present a paper
entitled "Sono-Truths: On Making Sonic Ethnography".Abstract:This paper
will theorise and reflect on the production of an "ethnographic sound film"
- a documentary without visuals. The research for this project was focused
in two areas. Firstly, the production team was interested in experimenting
with the decoupling of the audio-visual connection that is assumed in
ethnographic cinema. Secondly, this project addressed the use of sound
narration in ethnography. This paper proposes the notion of sono-truth, an
analogy of Rouch’s notion of 'cine-truth', as a means to articulate what
the research team was trying to accomplish with this project, and as a way
to articulate what sonic-ethnographers have been doing for decades. The
paper will also discuss the possibilities and limitations of sound works in
anthropology. In November and December 2012, the seminars will take place in
the auditorium N315 (Tallinn University Nova building). For further
