Janus Møller Jensen, from Nyborg, will present his paper entitled "The
Holy Field of St. Erik: Archbishop Jacob Ulvsson of Uppsala and the Crusade
against Russians, 1495–1497". The seminar will be held in Auditorium 303
in the Tallinn University Institute of History (Rüütli St 6) on Thursday,
15 November at 16:15.Late medieval crusading has not received a lot of
attention from medieval scholars in Scandinavia. However, this does not
mean that it was unimportant. On the contrary, it has been realized that
crusading was extremely important politically and ideologically in
Scandinavia. This paper will demonstrate this observation by focusing on
the crusade efforts against Russians in the second half of the fifteenth
century culminating in the Great Crusade of 1495-97 on a broad European
background. It was important, not just on the political level, but also on
a social level. The entire population in Sweden and Finland was asked to
participate through prayers and liturgy according to the general papal
crusade encyclicals. In all of this Archbishop Jacob Ulvsson played a
central role.Janus Møller Jensen is the manager of Nyborg castle (Østfyns
Museer). He holds a PhD from the University of Southern Denmark and has
published extensively on many aspects of crusading. For further information,
