Professor Mira Bergelson will deliver a public lecture entitled "Russian
Communication in Perspective". The lecture will be held in the Tallinn
University Institute of Communication (Tartu Rd 13) on Monday, January 30
at 16:00.The main focus of the lecture will be on the peculiarities of
Russian communication style as determined by the basic cultural values and
specific contexts of communication. Russian-Western interaction
is viewed as one type of such context both in professional and
academic situations.Mira Bergelson is a Professor in the Department of
Linguistics and Information Technology, Faculty of Foreign Languages and
Regional Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU). Her
research interests are linguistic aspects of communication,
cross-cultural pragmatics, and culture in discourse. Professor
Bergelson received her Ph.D. in linguistics
from Russian Academy of Sciences for a grammar description
of one African language. Her second doctoral dissertation was devoted to
the sociocultural pragmatics of communication. Her other fields of
expertise are international education and academic exchanges.Professor
Bergelson's professional experiences are very diverse but always focusing
on effective communication, which is a key instrument of management, and on
importance of cultural knowledge, which is in the heart of professional
communication.Professor Bergelson was born and grew up
in Moscow where she has always lived except for a few years of
studies and research in the US and Germany. She considers
herself bicultural and is fluent in Russian and English and speaks basic
German and French. She has researched a variety of indigenous languages and
cultures of Russia in the Caucasus, Eastern Siberia and Far
East.Professor Bergelson's experience as trainer and coach includes
programmes delivered for a variety of international corporate clients both
in Moscow and elsewhere in Europe.The lecture is in English
