Tallinn University Institute of Political Science and Governance doctoral
student Gerli Nimmerfeldt, will defend her PhD thesis entitled “Identity
Integration: Conceptualizing and Operationalizing the Example of
Second Generation Russians in Estonia" in the auditorium M-213 (TU Mare
building, Uus-Sadama 5) on Tuesday, May 24 at 12:00.The PhD thesis measures
and explains the processes of integration through the identity of the
second generation Russians living in Estonia. One of the goals of the
thesis is to show that seeing integration as a means for social cohesion on
the level of society is not supported by empirical studies where
integration is seen as a two-directional process on the level of an
individual – on the one hand focusing on the identification with one's
ethnic group and, on the other hand, focusing on the identification with
the majority group. The second goal is to critically evaluate the
measurement of identity-based integration through nominal categories of
self-determination. The third goal is to suggest an explanation which, in
addition to the identification with different groups, also incorporates
emotional connection with one's country of residence and feelings of
belonging on the level of society. The fourth goal is to examine which
factors influence the connection with Estonia among the second generation
Russians living in Estonia and which role the mechanisms of reactive
identity have in the processes of identity-based integration. The supervisor
of the thesis is Professor Raivo Vetik, TU Institute of Political Science
and Governance and Senior Researcher at the TU Institute of International
and Social Studies. The opponents of the thesis are Jens Schneider, Senior
Researcher at the Institute of Migration and Ethnic Studies at the
University of Amsterdam, and Associate-Professor Minna Säävälä, Faculty
of Sociology at the University of Helsinki. The analytical overview of this
PhD thesis is available for review at TU Academic Library’s repository
