Professor Bernd Wegner from Helmut-Schmidt University, Germany will give a
presentation entitled "The Second World War Reconsidered: Why the Germans
Lost" in the Institute of History (room 307) on Wednesday, September 7 at
15:00.Introduction to the presentation: The often splendid performance of
the German Wehrmacht on the battlefields of Europe and North Africa has
created the popular view that the Allies won the Second World War only late
and by the skin of their teeth. This view will be challenged by Bernd
Wegner, who argues that in spite of a highly developed art of operational
warfare, Hitler鈥檚 Germany suffered from both fundamental and structural
deficiencies and serious shortcomings of its strategic decision-making
system. As a result, Germany was from the outset unlikely to win the global
war.The presentation will be in English. For further information please
