Tallinn Virtual University Opened

On Wednesday, 10 December, the project of Tallinn Virtual University waspresented in TLU. It is a new initiative, the target of which is to makerecordings of different open lectures, interviews with lecturers anduniversity visitors, materials of seminars, summer schools, conferences andother interesting things available in the Web environment to everyoneinterested.

Professor Rein Raud, Rector of Tallinn University who is one of the
initiators of the virtual university project, believes that the Virtual
University will expand the customary limits of the academic environment.
鈥淭his initiative is one of the additions that will help TLU furthermore
to fulfil the role of being an intellectual centre. We believe that
thoughts thought inside TLU walls could be interesting to a wider public as
well. Every person with a vigilant mind would like to discuss the problems
of the past and the contemporary world. Experience has shown that the
society needs this sort of high level intellectual debates,鈥 marked Raud.

Tarmo J眉risto, who introduced the project, agreed with the Rector and
assured that the Virtual University will help to lower the barrier between
the university and society. According to J眉risto, the target of the
Virtual University is still not to replace, but mainly to complete and
intensify auditory work.

After the opening of the Virtual University, everyone can access videos of
interviews with Jaques Revel, Zygmunt Bauman, 脕gnes Heller, John Berry,
Anthony Giddens and several other authorities in their field. It is
possible to download both podcasts and full-length videos from the
environment.

The plan is to complete the environment with recordings of Tallinn
University open lectures, materials of discussions, seminars, summer
schools and conferences. The materials of Tallinn Virtual University are
available on virtuaal.tlu.ee.

At the moment, the materials in the environment are mainly from the field
of Humanitarian and Social Sciences, but Tarmo J眉risto promises that the
situation will not remain like this for long 鈥 the environment as a
platform is open and hopefully will thrive in all subject fields.

The environment of Tallinn Virtual University is based on Toru technology
and administered by Nagi O脺. The videos of the Virtual University are
located in Toru video site and can be found through Toru search as well.
