Tallinn University and Tallinn Secondary Science School Sign a Co-operation Agreement

The director of Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences Professor Tiit Land, and the director of Tallinn Secondary Science
School signed a co-operation agreement on September 1. The agreement
aims to raise interest among young people in the fields of natural and
exact sciences and also in the field of technology. With the assistance of
the TU faculty members and the university’s technology facilities, this
co-operation will enable the students of Tallinn Secondary Science School
to achieve a greater depth in their study in the fields of natural and
exact sciences. The university will also introduce students to basic
research and study processes and include students in the work of the
university during excursions. The director of Tallinn University Institute
of Mathematics and Natural Sciences professor Tiit Land, was delighted that
the lengthy and productive discussions with the Tallinn Secondary
Science School had finally produced a firm agreement. “Prior to this
agreement, the Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences has already been co-operating closely with the
Tallinn Secondary School of Sciences in providing access to our laboratory
facilities and many of our staff take part in the students laboratory work.
The students of the Science School have also been able to conduct their own
research in our analytical and biochemical laboratories under the
supervision of our faculty members. Their projects have won many
prizes in students’ scientific research competitions. In 2009, Kaileen
Raudsepp, supervised by Professor Ruth Shimmo, won 3rd prize and this year
Maria-Liesbeth Kaitsa won 2nd prize which gave her an opportunity
to participate in the European Union Young Scientist competition in
Lisbon” said Land.Gunnar Polma, the director of Tallinn Secondary Science
School believes that public schools do not provide enough opportunities for
students who are particularly talented in the scientific field. To increase
the depth of  interest in the scientific field among students, the
university needs to become an “an older brother” to the secondary
school, and give a hand in helping the these talented students. The
agreement was signed for an indefinite period.
