Tallinn Summer School Offers 18 International Courses

The Sixth Tallinn University International Summer School will be held from
July 11–29. This is one of the largest international projects of the
university – 18 courses will be offered this summer. As well as offering
the possibility to learn six languages, there will also be courses in
painting, film making, world philosophy, creative writing, photography and
many more interesting courses. Registration is open until the middle of
July.Every year the courses have been connected by a current theme, e.g.
globalization or philosophy of everyday life and this year several courses
analyze the meaning of fear. The main course of the Summer School is "Fear:
Poetics and Practices" held from July 22–29. Further information on this
course is available here.In previous years the Summer School has presented
one main speaker. However, in 2011 there will be a greater selection.
Participants in the Summer School will have the opportunity to meet the
crime writer Peter Robinson who has won many awards and is best known for
his Inspector Banks series of novels. Peter Robinson will teach the
creative writing course from July 22–29, which will also contribute to
the analysis of the culture of fear. He will be available to meet his
readers and discuss his work on July 26 and everyone is welcome. Further
information is available here.This is the first Summer School in which it
is possible to study Chinese. The beginner's course will be taught by the
teachers of Tallinn University Confucius Institute. The fee for the
three-week course is €100. Five students will be able to participate for
free – please ask for details.As well as offering a course on
photography, this year the Summer School offers a course designed for
teachers. Participants will not only learn how to introduce fine arts into
the class-room when teaching pre-school and primary school children but
will actually be able to take away lesson plans for their own use. Those
interested in history are invited to participate in the course on European

of Tallinn Summer School will be held. The lecturers are Frank Furedi,
Professor of Sociology, University of Kent; Danny Dorling, Professor of
Human Geography, University of Sheffield; and Jeffrey C. Alexander,
Professor of Sociology, Yale University. These lectures will discuss the
main theme of this year's Summer School – fear. The lectures are
open to everyone.A cultural programme is provided for international
students, which includes visits to museums, trips to other parts of
Estonia, lectures on Estonian politics, the economy and culture and many
other events. The cultural programme is supported by Tallinn City
Enterprise.The number of participants at Tallinn Summer School has grown
steadily. There were 120 participants in 2006. However, last year there
were 301 people from 46 countries participating in 17 courses. This year
