Tallinn Pedagogical College Merges with Tallinn University

Negotiations between Tallinn Pedagogical College and Tallinn University
regarding joint cooperation have resulted in a decision to merge the two
educational institutions. As a result, Tallinn Pedagogical College will
become a college of Tallinn University.The Tallinn University Senate
approved the merger of Tallinn Pedagogical College and Tallinn University
at its committee meeting held on 21 May. This decision will take effect
after the directive of the Government of the Republic of Estonia has come
into force. This will probably occur in August 2012.The Ministry of
Education and Science considers this merger mutually beneficial and has
prepared materials for the directive of the Government of the Republic of
Estonia. As a result of this partnership, opportunities to further develop
the curricula of Pre-school Teacher, Youth Work and Social Work have been
identified.Koit N玫lvak, Rector of Tallinn Pedagogical College, said, "We
believe that the merger with Tallinn University will benefit both parties.
As a Tallinn University college we will maintain our strengths, such as our
curricula, scholastic aptitude and the reputation of our graduates in the
labour market. At the same time, we hope to receive additional resources
for internationalization and development."Tiit Land, Rector of Tallinn
University, commented on the merger, "Tallinn University is delighted that
the merger will enable us to strengthen our teacher training and that the
University will start working in the promising field of youth work. One of
the aims of the University is to create closer connections between studies,
science and practice and we anticipate that Tallinn Pedagogical College
will help the University achieve this objective".
