Student Film Festival Best of BFM Shows the Work of Young Talents

The Baltic Film and Media School鈥檚 annual student film festival Best of BFM starts today, May 11th, and shows the course projects and theses of film and media students.

鈥淏est of BFM is like counting chickens, but we do it in the spring instead of autumn. This is very exciting to all lecturers, as well as students. First of all, this is often the first time most students meet a larger audience and secondly it gives them a chance to compete and learn from each other,鈥 said director of BFM, Katrin Saks.

A jury, consisting of documentary and TV director Peep Puks, documentary director Raimo J玫erand and film critic Jaan Ruus, appraises the films. The culmination of the festival will be the award ceremony on Friday, where the best films will be given BOB鈥檚 or the student film 鈥淥scars鈥.

This year, in addition to the student films, the film 鈥淛obs鈥 will screen on Wednesday at 16:00. The film is about the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, and will be commented by executive producer David Traub. The organiser of Best of BFM Martin Ruus says this gives the students a welcome chance to ask questions straight from a Hollywood producer and at the same time think about the overlapping aspects of creativity and entrepreneurship: 鈥淢eeting David will definitely give an interesting insight into the backstage of a large-scale film production. Steve Jobs was one of the more exciting and controversial entrepreneurs, whose success and setbacks came due to him relentlessly following his principles 鈥 I believe the young moviemakers will get much food for thought from there.鈥

Baltic Film and Media School awards were first given out in 2007 as the Holy Cow award for best film. In 2013, the name was changed to Best of BFM and the scope of the festival as well as the number of categories were expanded. This year, the week will be filled with over 60 short films, including animations, documentaries and fictional films. All events of the festival are open to the public for free.
