Professor Rein Raud Acknowledged Again for His Contribution to Japanese Studies
Rein Raud, Professor of Asian and Cultural Studies at Tallinn University,
has been presented with a prestigious Japanese award, the Gold and Silver
Star of the Order of the Rising Sun. The award acknowledges Professor
Raud's contribution to the management of Japanese Studies in Estonia and
the development of Japanese language studies. This award marks the second
recognition of Professor Raud by Japan within a short period of time – in
August he was presented with the commendation of the Foreign Minister of
Japan.The Japanese ambassador to Estonia, His Excellency Hideaki Hoshi will
present the award. When giving reasons for presenting Rein Raud with the
award, the Embassy of Japan explained, "Professor Raud has not only been an
important authority in the field of Japanese studies, but he has also been
the leading figure in promoting studies of the Japanese language. Professor
Raud has helped to develop several student exchange programmes between
Tallinn University and a number of universities in Japan."Raud has been
active on the board of the European Association for Japanese Studies and
helped to organize the very successful 13th Conference of the Association,
which was held in Tallinn at the end of August this year. Professor Raud
was elected as President of the European Association for Japanese Studies
after the conference ended.The Order of the Rising Sun was established in
1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. The Order was the first national decoration
awarded by the Japanese Government. It is the second most prestigious
Japanese decoration after the Order of the Chrysanthemum. The Gold and
Silver Star of the Order of the Rising Sun presented to Professor Raud
belongs to the second class of the Order. Many well-known politicians,
military and business professionals have received this award.
