Nearly 10 000 Studenst Start the New Academic Year in Tallinn University
The Rector of Tallinn University Prof Rein Raud, the Chancellor of Justice
of the Republic of Estonia Indrek Teder, TU professor of cultural theory
Tiina Ann Kirss, and Argo Ralja from the Student Union greeted the academic
family and 2899 new students at the opening ceremony on September 1. A
total of 9921 students began the new academic year in Tallinn
University.This represents an increase of almost 400 students compared to
September 2009. From September 1st to 3rd, new students can become
acquainted with the work of the institutes, its academic traditions,
the library and student organisations. TU Studia Generalia starts the
autumn season on September 2 with the lecture The Responsibility of a
Scholar by the rector of Tallinn Univesity鈥檚 Professor Rein Raud. Classes
at the university start on September 6. There are 86 new students for
applied higher education studies, 1845 for bachelor鈥檚 studies, 890 for
master鈥檚 studies and 77 new students for doctoral studies.
Altogether, 2899 new students will begin to study at Tallinn
University which is 23 students more than last year. The increases have
occurred in both applied higher education studies as well as in
bachelor鈥檚 and doctoral studies. There are 1175 state budgetary and 1723
non-state budgetary new students this year. This reflects an increase in
both state budgetary and non-state budgetary groups compared to last year.
Tallinn University is the third largest university in Estonia. It comprises
20 institutes and 5 colleges, and study and research are conducted in seven
different fields of study (education, humanitarian subjects, arts, natural
sciences, social sciences, health and law). Its main strengths lie in the
fields of humanities and social sciences, but it also has a strong and
constantly growing component of natural and exact sciences, as well as a
notable tradition of teacher training and educational research.
