Krista Aren - How to Understand Room?
How does the colour of the walls affect our emotions? What are good proportions for a room? Which kind of light energises us, and which kind makes us sleepy? Krista Aren, an interior decorator and associate professor at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School explains how the room around us affects our being.

The modern urbanised human being spends increasing amounts of time indoors. The fast pace of urbanisation makes us live in an environment created by someone else.
Most people do not understand what the room around them encompasses. This, however, will always affect our mood and emotions.
It is not safe to move in a baldy planned building or cityscape. Being around the wrong kind of materials for extended periods will affect our health.
A workspace with bad lighting will wear out your eyes; aggressive colours will leave a mark on your mood. All these components affect the quality of our work, even though we are not used to think about it.
How can a person participate in designing their environment without being an architect, designer or a decorator? We can start with the following questions:
- What are good proportions for a room?
- Which light ignites active thought processes and which light makes us sleepy?
- What materials seem distinguished and durable, and which are 鈥渃heap鈥 and have a short life span?
- What colours help us work with ease and which will tire us out within half an hour?
See and think!
Mindful viewing and analysis help us see the unnecessary components and things that do not fit with the general image, and that quintessential clean use of materials is sometimes healthier than the visual noise and garbage we seem to be used to.
