Films from 39 countries and international guest speakers on Sleepwalkers
The International Student and Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers programme of Tallinn Dark Nights Film Festival starts next week, bringing the audiences 110 films from 39 countries. Among them are works by Oscar nominees, winners of the British Film Academy and Sundance Film Festival, as well as from graduates of the leading film schools in Europe. Special events for all cinemaphiles will be lectures by the reknowned social anthropologist Brian Palmer and a film expert Louis Savy.

All Sleepwalkers events take place in Tallinn University Nova building in SuperNova Cinema 19-23 November.
鈥淪wimmer鈥 premieres in Sleepwalkers this year, a short film by the Scottish cinematographer Lynne Ramsay, who is familiar to the Estonian audience thanks to 鈥淲e Need to Talk about Kevin鈥. The second gem is Gabriel Gauchet鈥檚 鈥淭he Mass of Men鈥 that deals with the intricacies of bureaucracy, and has won the Best Short Film Award from the prestigious Locarno Film Festival. The European Film Academy鈥檚 Short Matters! Tour films will also be shown, which have won awards from festivals in Berlin and Venice.
鈥淭his year鈥檚 Sleepwalkers programme is versatile and rich in content, presenting new and continuingly talented filmmakers,鈥 says Peter Murdmaa, Director of the Sleepwalkers Festival.
The most famous guest of Sleepwalkers is Brian Palmer, the legendary lecturer from Harvard, Gothenburg and Uppsala, whose classes brought in 600 students in one semester, and who was awarded with the Harvard鈥檚 best lecturer award, the Levenson Prize.
The social anthropologist Brian Palmer gives a public lecture about Citizen Courage in Tallinn University Astra building on 20 November at 4.30 p.m. as a special event of Sleepwalkers and the Baltic Bridges workshops. Palmer remembers Sophie Scholl in his lecture, who skipped school to distribute anti-Hitler pamphlets. Also, the 11-year-old Malala Yousafzai, who blogged about the brutality of Taliban while living under its regime. Palmer is haunted by knowing people who risk daily to make the world a more humane place, and he asks: What can our braver fellow-citizens and departed friends teach us about living?
Brian Palmer鈥檚 book 鈥淕lobal Values 101鈥 is based on his Harvard lectures. The doctoral thesis he defended in Harvard looked into the concept of solidarity in Sweden. In 2006, he published a book in collaboration with Per-Anders Forstop about the rhetoric and symbolism in Swedish political campaigns. He published the book 鈥101 Historical Heroes鈥 (鈥101 historiska hj盲ltar鈥) with Ola Larsmo recently, which will be followed by publications in English and Korean.
The Student and Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers is one of three programmes of Tallinn Dark Nights Film Festival (P脰FF). This year, Sleepwalkers is taking place for the 14th time.
