Director-General of UNESCO visited Tallinn University

On May 5th, Tallinn University had the honour to host Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, during her visit to Estonia. Bokova, accompanied by our rector Tiit Land, visited the Tallinn University Institute of Informatics’ Centre for Educational Technology, where she was introduced to the projects, achievements and plans of the centre. A central talking point was the digital revolution in Estonian education.

Head of the centre Mart Laanpere, educational technology lecturer Hans Põldoja, professor of digital information systems Timo Tobias Ley, informatics lecturer Lili Kesa and senior lecturer Kai Pata, gave short introcutions to the projects and the centre.

“UNESCO is the most important global organisation that deals with education and culture. This is why a visit by the director-general is more important for us than that of the secretary general of NATO, for we do not deal with defence politics,” said Laanpere.

The head of the centre believes that the visit was made possible by Estonia’s success story in applying technology to everyday learning and educational innovation. Tallinn University Institute of Informatics’ Centre for Educational Technology is, in fact, the biggest and most experienced research centre in the Baltic States.

Irina Bokova also visited the Centre for Innovation in Education, where the head of development Klemen Slabina gave a short overview of their work.
