Candidates for a New Rector for Tallinn University Announced
Three candidates have agreed to stand in the forthcoming election for a new
rector for Tallinn University: Peeter Kreitzberg, Chairman of the Cultural
Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Estonia; Tiit Land, Director of
Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Anu
Toots, Professor at Tallinn University Institute of Political Science and
Governance.Peeter Kreitzberg graduated from the University of Tartu Faculty
of Mathematics in 1972 and defended his doctoral thesis in 1993 at Lund
University. He has published hundreds of scientific and popular science
articles on a wide range of educational and political issues. Peeter
Kreitzberg was elected Professor of Education Theory of the University of
Tartu in 1992. During 1996 he was a visiting professor at Lund University
and from 1997–2002 was a professor at Tallinn University. He was the
Minister of Culture and Education of the Republic of Estonia in 1995 and
has been a member of the Parliament of Estonia since 1999. Presently he is
Chairman of the parliamentary Cultural Affairs Committee. Peeter Kreitzberg
sits on the Board of Governors of Tallinn University, the University of
Tartu and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Peeter Kreitzberg was
nominated by Tallinn University Law School.Tiit Land is Professor of
Chemisty at Tallinn University and Director of Tallinn University Institute
of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He defended his doctoral thesis at
Stockholm University in the field of neurochemistry and neurotoxicology. He
is a former Vice Dean of Academic Affairs at Stockholm University and has
had extensive administrative experience. His research is primarily involved
with molecular mechanisms in iron metabolism and inflammatory processes and
their role in neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer's disease. He has
published numerous scientific articles in international peer-reviewed
publications and has successfully supervised doctoral students. He is an
active participant in the administration and popularisation of science.
Tiit Land was nominated by Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences.Anu Toots is the Professor of Comparative Public Policy at
Tallinn University Institute of Political Science and Governance. Her
research has been focused on the development of a welfare state, the
development of social and education policy, and the issues of
contemporary citizenship. Anu Toots has been involved with the
International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement
since 1998, representing Estonia at the General Assembly and has managed
research projects in comparative education in Estonia. She has applied for
and has been awarded several research grants (e.g. Estonian Science
Foundation, Open Society Institute, MacArthur Foundation) and published
more than 50 international scientific articles. Anu Toots was nominated by
Tallinn University Institute of Political Science and Governance.The
candidates will introduce their election platform prior to the election and
a public debate between the candidates will be held on February 8, 2011.The
new rector will be elected by the TU electoral body on February 14,
2011.The five-year-term of office for the new rector will commence on May
15, 2011.
