Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt visited Tallinn University

On November 26, 2008 H.E Mr. Marzouk paid a visit to Tallinn University. Hemet with Rector Rein Raud and Prof. Otto Jastrow. The aim of the visit wasto discuss how the embassy can help the university in developing the fieldof Arabics at Tallinn University.

The following ideas were exchanged:
The university would need a lecturer who could teach the students of Middle
Eastern and Asian Studies, specializing in Arabic Studies. These students
may also take minor courses in international relations, cultural theory,
and other areas that will give them a broader background in their
specialization. Currently, Prof. Jastrow is the only full-fledged
professor in the department teaching students in the BA programme. Arabic
has been taught at Tallinn University since the academic year 2007/2008.
The university would need a young scholar who has also ideally studied
either English or German philology and who could teach the authentic Arabic
language and contemporary Arab culture.

The university has recently established the Baltic Graduate School for the
organization and development of doctoral studies in the field of humanities
and social sciences. Through this interdisciplinary school, studies in
Arabics can be made accessible to the doctoral students of Latvian and
Lithuanian universities.

The ideas of co-operation between universities in both countries was
discussed. Rector Raud stressed that the university would need good partner
universities where Tallinn University students could spend a term or two.
Likewise students from Egypt can study in various programs in English at
Tallinn University. The staff exchange for short visits could also be of
interest to both sides. At present co-operation with Mansoura University is
under discussion.
