4K-Cinema is four times sharper than a regular cinema
The TU Baltic Film and Media School鈥檚 technical director, Tarmo Rajaleid, discusses the super sharp 4K-Cinema picture in this One-Minute lecture.
鈥淚n modern digital cinema, two picture resolution standards are used: 2K and 4K. The term 4K refers to a picture that is 4096 pixels wide and 2160 pixels high. The term 2K refers to a picture with a resolution of 2048 x1080 pixels. A 4K picture is four times sharper than a 2K picture,鈥 explained Tarmo Rajaleid.
鈥淣ew Full HD home television sets have 1920 x1080 pixels, which is almost as big as a 2K digital cinema. By comparison, the usual television picture seen in Estonia is only 720 x 576 pixels when compared to a 4K-Cinema picture. As a result, the 4K-Cinema picture is almost 22 times sharper than a normal television picture,鈥 said Rajaleid.
In 4K-Cinema the picture resolution is so sharp that is it difficult to distinguish between individual pixels. Therefore, even when sitting close to the screen in a 4K-Cinema, one can enjoy a good film experience.
The first cinema in Estonia to employ 4K-equipment was the SuperNova cinema located in the Baltic Film and Media School building. The SuperNova cinema with 105 seats is equipped with the most modern projection and sound technology. The international student short film festival, Sleepwalkers, is held in this cinema, and regular film premiers and evening meetings with authors are also organised there. In addition, weekly cinema s茅ances offering a high-level cinema experience have been started.
