Developing a positive way to manage the current border-crossing movement of
people is one of the key contemporary challenges for Estonia. There is a
growing need to contend with the contradiction between a traditional
nation-state centred restrictive immigration policy and, on the other hand,
the decline of the population, needs of the labour market, Europeanization
and globalisation.
The key idea of the conference is to discuss in which manner it is possible
to formulate a realist but still more open migration policy in a manner
complying with the needs of nation state and societal sustainability –
utilising the positive aspects of transnational migration and avoiding the
potentially negative consequences. The speakers will discuss
transnationalisation and examine the migration policy experiences of
various countries. In the final part of the conference, the contributions
are interpreted in the current Estonian societal and policy context.
The conference is linked to the European Union 7th framework research
project Trans-Net (Transnationalisation, Migration and Transformation:
Multi-Level Analysis of Migrant Transnationalism).
The working language is English. Conference is free of charge.
