Close but closed landscapes

On the role of the military past (1900 onwards) on Tallinn’s Waterfront and the creation of military heritage

Estonia has faced a number of different geopolitical situations in the 20th century, all leaving traces of defence and militarisation in the landscape. This master thesis research focuses on Tallinn Waterfront from 1900 onwards from three angles. First, a historical landscape biography is composed by analysing historical maps, showing how militarisation shaped the seaside. Secondly, an inventory is made of the remnants of this military past, of its military heritage. The third and final part is the role of the military heritage within the future spatial development of Tallinn. This was conducted by interviewing people involved in this process. An important aspect of my research is not solely focussing on heritage as an object, but on the broader legacy on the landscape. In this respect, the notion of absence is crucial for understanding the role of the military past in present-day Tallinn.
