On Tuesday, 16 May at 18:15 the US anthropologist and journalist Sarah Kendzior gives a presentation on "The Rise of American Athoritarianism".
Abstract:
The election of Donald Trump is part of a broader rise of authoritarianism throughout the West, boosted by white supremacy guised as populism. In the US, Trump’s rule has forced a constant test of checks and balances, as democratic institutions push back against attacks on freedom of speech, assembly and religion; the emergence of a dynastic kleptocracy in the White House; and an international corruption and election interference scandal that members of the executive branch are trying desperately to suppress. This talk will discuss how Trump rose to power, whether democratic institutions can hold, and similarities between Trump and other autocratic leaders around the world. It will also discuss how anthropology, as a discipline, is better equipped to understand these sweeping changes in political culture, and how qualitative and ethnographic methods help illuminate patterns in autocracies that the media and other social scientists often miss.
