Abstract
50 years on, and Capitalism still appears pregnant with immanent collapse. Howard Caygill (2015) writing on resistance, defined 1968 as the apogee of the Situationiste Internationale. This he declared left resistance at a moment of unfulfilled potential.
In 1977, Chris Marker released "Grin Without A Cat", his essay film on the political tumult of the 1960s and 1970s, exploring the social upheavals across the world from Vietnam, Cuba and Paris. In preparation for my own practice led research on ‘Cultures of Resistance’, I will be exploring the notion that Situationism in its method of détournement and dérive, continue up to today, the experience of which can be found in cultural movements such as AnarchoPunk, pacifist protest movements like Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Campaign Against The Arms Trade, Pranksterism such as the Yes Men, and Design Anarchy - Adbusters and Brandalism, as well as in Civil Rights most notably the rise of Social Media and #BlackLivesMatter.
In this session, I will introduce my research briefly, then we will watch the first part of "Grin Without A Cat". If time permits, a discussion will follow.Biography: David has a background in Visual Anthropology, Documentary Production and Web Design.
