Abstract:

J. R. R. Tolkien used Old English literature in various ways as a source of inspiration for his own writings. He quoted or adopted words, verses, characters and even entire scenes from Old English poems. In my presentation, I would like to focus of how he transformed certain characters from Beowulf – especially Unferth and Queen Wealhtheow – into characters of his own fictional universe. Besides the original poem and The Lord of the Rings, I will also talk about his translation of Beowulf and his “folktale” version of the poem, Sellic Spell, which I consider transitional texts in this respect.

About the speaker:

Andrea Nagy is an associate professor at the Institute of English Studies at Károli Gáspár University, Budapest. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on the representations of women, and especially the representation of female violence in Old English poetry, and continues to do research on this subject.
