Mirrors are enigmatic and mysterious; hiding the world behind them while seemingly reflecting the one in front.
Reflective surfaces have been capturing the hearts and imaginations of humans since their conception: ancient cultures like the Mayans and Aztecs used them in religious rituals and rites.
A more contemporary example would be Jean Cocteau and his works (The Blood of a Poet, Orpheus, Testament of Orpheus), where mirrors function as portals between our world and the one beyond, the pathways through which Death comes and goes. It is said that one can see Death at work when they look into a mirror at their life. (Heurtebise reveals: “I'll give you the secret of secrets. Mirrors are the doors through which Death comes and goes. Look at yourself in a mirror all your life and you'll see death at work like bees in a hive of glass.”)
Estonian traditions also contain many mirror-related rituals. For example, all mirrors in the house of the recently deceased have to be covered up. Walking into an empty room with a lit candle when the year changes, one is said to be able to see their future.
It was through the looking glass that Alice discovered a new and amazing world. It was the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter which reflected the viewer's deepest desires.
Mirrors can be cunning, deceptive and dangerous. We'll never know for sure what is hiding beneath their surface or on the other side.
The key words for our party are: the nether, secrets, mysticism, magic, irresistible attraction, doppelgänger, alternate realities and so forth. Let your fantasy flow free.
You may come as your own mirror image, a doppelgänger, your opposite - both in body and mind. Draw inspiration from films and works of literature or any other myths, stories or even your own imagination. For this is the only night an introvert may become the life of the party or an aggressive choleric bully the most demure and kind person alive. Anything is possible when one traverses the mirror through to the other side.
You may come as any character from Cocteau's films, Alice: Through the Looking-Glass or Harry Potter or anyone else you can think of.
Anything is possible.
Let's look into the mirror and, for the first time, gaze through it.
