Mart Laanpere: Computational thinking is usually defined as "the thought processes involved in expressing solutions as computational steps or algorithms that can be carried out by a computer". Computational thinking is actually not a new concept, as it has been promoted already in 1970-ties by prof. Seymour Papert, one of the early pioneers of educational computing. However, the idea of teaching complex and abstract knowledge from modern computer science as early as in the middle school lost the ground in 1990-ties to alternative approach that focused on the skills of using basic office software and internet. The new call for re-defining the aim and contents of computer science education from CT perspective came from Jeannette Wing in 2006 and since then the idea has become really powerful, influencing curriculum designers, teachers, teacher educators. This presentation focuses on recent developments under CT umbrella in Estonia, Central European and Scandinavian countries, as well as the research projects DT staff is involved in.
