The Estonian Institute of Humanities at Tallinn University and the Estonian
Literary Museum will host the IABA Europe 2011 conference entitled
"Trajectories of (Be)longing: Europe in Life Writing". The conference will
be held in Tallinn University on May 18–19 and will include some of the
best-known European Life Writing scholars representing 26 countries.This
three-day conference will attempt to answer many questions. Among others,
some of these questions are: Would it be possible and/or productive to
specifically discuss European modes and practices of life writing? What are
the temporal dynamics of these modes and practices, in particular with
respect to major historical ruptures and transformations of Europe as a
concept and as a geographical, political, social and cultural entity? How
does Europe achieve (in)visibility in life writing in relation to issues of
migration, displacement, diaspora and travel?The conference will host the
cream of European Life Writing scholars – 79 scientists from 26 countries
will speak at the conference. The conference will be opened with a keynote
speech by Philippe Lejeune, a world-famous French critic and theorist of
autobiography. The Estonian keynote speech will be given by Merle Karusoo,
a playwright and stage director, whose presentation will end with a play
“We, the Life Writers”. This play has been created in cooperation with
Tallinn University students who will also participate in the play.The
keynote speeches by Philippe Lejeune, Alfred Hornung, Vieda Skultans and
