A conference entitled "20 Years of Independence" will be held at
Tallinn University on August 22–23 in order to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of Estonia regaining independence. The conference will
specifically focus on social sciences in Estonia.Plenary speakers of the
conference will be Professor Pjotr Sztompka (Jagiellonian University,
Poland) with a presentation entitled "The Dilemmas and Ambivalences of
Post-Communist Era"; Mikko Lagerspetz (Senior Researcher at Tallinn
University), who will discuss the role of social sciences in Estonia; and
Professor Marju Lauristin (University of Tartu), who will will give an
overview of the Estonian Human Development Report and its influence on the
society in the recent years.The conference will bring together Estonian
social scientists but at the same time it wil broaden the scope of
discussion by involving related disciplines and the general public. 13
interdisciplinary workgroups (covering themes from pop culture to changes
in education) have been created where speakers will present their work and
