Young talented composers successful at BFM 3rd Digital Composition Contest

The winners of this year's third Digital Composition Contest for school pupils organized by Tallinn University Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School (BFM) were selected in two categories (electronic dance music and experimental music) and two age groups among nearly 100 pieces by 58 participants from 28 schools all over Estonia.

The winners of this year's third Digital Composition Contest for school pupils organized by Tallinn University Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School (BFM) were selected in two categories (electronic dance music and experimental music) and two age groups among nearly 100 pieces by 58 participants from 28 schools all over Estonia.

Since 2015 the head of the jury is the internationally well recognized Estonian composer of Lotte topic Musicals and author of several Eurovision Song Contest songs Priit Pajusaar. The contest was organized by and members of the jury were the initiator of the contest professor of music teaching methodology Tiina Selke and expert staff members Avo Ulvik, Gerhard Lock and Marit M玫istlik-Tamm. The winners were congratulated also by BFM director Katrin Saks. The award ceremony took place on April 22 within the BFM Didactics of Arts and Riho P盲ts Center organized international conference CFMAEYTT/TTS2015 鈥濼he Changing Face of Music and Art Education. In the younger age group (11鈥15) 34 pieces were applied by 22 authors: in the electronic dance music category 7 and the soundtrack/experimental music category 26 pieces. In the older age group 57 piece were applied by 36 authors: in the electronic dance music category 31 and the soundtrack/experimental music category 26 pieces. According to the jury the contest was competitive, especially in the older age group, where a number of interesting piece were submitted. To develop a musical idea within 3鈥4 minutes as required in the rules computers offer numerous possibilities, including using acoustic sounds. In consequence it was really not easy to make a choice between the best of the best. Concerning the Grand Prix winner the jury underlined the outstanding freshness of his music and the smart usage of different forms of expression.

The organizers and the jury congratulate all winners. Alongside tangible prices all awarded pieces will be premiered at the fourth Young Composers Lab (YCL) audiovisual concert on June 9th in the caffee 鈥濻inilind鈥, where also takes place a round table discussion with the young composers.

The 3rd Digital Composition Contest was supported by Tallinn City Education Department, Tallinn University Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School and the Grand Prix sponsor EW Sound & Light.

However we encourage all aficionados to participate at the contest also next year, when in addition to the categories electronic dance music and experimental music a new, audiovisual category will be announced.
