Abstract
The growth of backpacker and independent traveller tourism has been a significant global phenomenon over the last three decades. Currently in Australia the segment is worth over 3.3 billion Australian dollars annually. The industry is lobbying for a further expansion of the working holiday visa program to alleviate employment shortages in regional Australia. What factors are driving this growth and who are the backpackers? How has this market changed since the mid 1980's?
