Composer Bryan W. Christian (USA) delivers a public lecture „The
crossing point: music/theatre, american/estonian, latin/english,
Clairvaux/Shakespeare“ on 1st of June at 16.00 at Tallinn University
Institute of Fine Arts (Lai st. 13, concert venue L-208). Also excerpts of
Bryan W. Christian‘s new composition „Oriemur, we will rise“ will be
played.Commissioned by Sirje Mõttus and Triin Ella, Bryan completed
„Oriemur, we will rise“, a work for accordion, mezzo-soprano, and
actor, in 2010. Being in Tallinn for the world premier, he plans speak to
students, faculty, and guests at TU about the inspiration and ideas behind
his new composition and how they relate to seminal figures/compositions in
American contemporary classical music. The text Oriemur is an amalgam of
fragments from Shakespeare’s King Lear and the English translation and
original Latin of Bernard of Clairvaux’s 30th sermon on the Song of
Songs. New narratives emerge by taking these fragmented texts out of
context and interweaving their words, meanings, and associations.Christian
will discuss his fascination with memory and its role in his composition
process. Bryan is most intrigued by the architectural/spatial organization
of memory as used by the medieval Cistercian monks and its relationship to
their contemplative meditation during the process of recollection. Oriemur,
we will rise continues to explore what he believes is the compositional
value of memory. As well, he will discuss how the time in Estonia from
2008-2009 influenced his musical thinking. Bryan will conclude in his talk
with a brief discussion of how strong artistic and musical relationships
may continue to be forged between the United States and Estonia. The lecture
is in english, entrance is free.More information: Triin Ella,
