RASI seminaril teeb ettekande Abel Polese teemal: State-citizen relations in the XXI century, a view from the Global South: making the point of LABOUR and precariousness in 8 Asian countries and beyond

Tutvustus:

Putting the state at the center of the inquiry, Post-Weberian states theory suggests that a number of functions are (still) delegated from the citizen to the state for the common good of a population. An increasing amount of empirical evidence has been challenging this assumption. On the one hand, we have classical sociological and public policy approaches, with laws and policies implemented for the good of the majority, with deviation from social and cultural norms being considered still the exception. On the other hand, we have a growing body of evidence showing that it is not so. With a few exceptions, the construction of the political system originates from desires that do not necessarily embed the needs of a population or a country’s inhabitants in the long term.

LABOUR has been designed as a project to explore these contradictions and identify cases proving the long-term failure of a number of policies especially related to the labour market. This presentation will provide an overview on the state of the art of the research, offer a few provocative thoughts about the way the labour market (and social policies in general) work in reality and answer questions about how RASI and TLU people can participate in the programme (i.e. by doing research or applying for a fellowship to spend a research period at a partner’s organisation listed on the project’s website )
