keel. Seminari tutvustus: "National memorial cultures have recently
been a major subject of historical research in mainly France, Germany, and
Poland. Despite this fact, there is surprisingly little research on this
topic in Sweden and the Baltic Sea region so far. "Between 'deluge' and
'good old days'" is dealing for the first time with the question of how the
commemoration of 'Swedish times' is being carried out in areas once
dominated by Sweden or having been part of the Swedish realm. 'Memory' and
'commemoration' in this context refers to different representations of a
nation's past in everyday life or on specific holydays – in contrast to
professional history writing, which might not be necessarily part of common
national culture. The talk's focus will be on monuments, feasts,
celebrations, museums, and tourist spots. At the end, the question will be
treated what kind of images Swedish rule left in the Baltic Sea states and
how these images influence national, regional, or local self-perceptions
today."
