Student project: Grids - a collaborative multi-user music making application

During the spring semester in their integrated courses project, 3 Human-Computer Interaction Masters programme students created a collaborative multi-user music making application called GRIDS that up to 4 people can collaboratively use with their smartphones. The integrated courses project combines four courses: interaction design methods, developing interactive systems, evaluating user experience and practice/business.

The project continues to build on the idea of using smartphones as input devices (remotes) for interactive multi-user content. “If we look at all the digital content on public shared screens that has the potential to be interactive and thus more engaging or useful to the users we see that the first problem we face is the lack of universal input for the interactions,” says Jaak Ritso, the team’s lead web developer. “Our approach is to use smartphones as input devices for different interactive digital content, with special focus on multi-user interactions,” adds Piret Alvre, the lead designer.
In addition to Grids, the music making application, the team has developed a variety of different content prototypes for the same setting: one big shared screen and multiple users interacting with the content with their smartphones. From voting and quiz apps that could be used in educational settings to multi-player games, installations and VJ apps, where the audience can change the visuals of the event.
“We are currently playing around with numerous content ideas, potential future customer segments and technologies: from entertainment and interactive ads on digital billboards to installations, exhibitions and interactive cinema and theatre projects,” says Rasmus Rattas, the head of content development in the team.
