Liberal Arts at Tallinn University

Jyri, why did you choose to study at the (SOGOLAS)? Well at the time when I was looking into which university to apply for, I had great interest on having a change of the scenery of Finland. Tallinn's practicality, previous visits and a good word from the friends who lived here definitely played a part on deciding to come here. The other two big reasons were first of all the possibility to study a degree in English. The second big reason was the Liberal Arts programme, even though I had experience in some of the fields of the modules that were offered I didn't feel comfortable picking a single subject to major in - or at least I couldn't decide one over the other. The study programme of Liberal Arts is very wide. Why is it good to get knowledge in different fields? The wider the knowledge base of a student or a researcher the easier it is to come up with new ideas based on combining different fields. Of course there is always overlap between subjects, but the better the basics on multiple scientific fields, the more coherent ideas one can come up with. Also gathering the basic knowledge on multiple field is extremely helpful in finding out in which field the specialization of the student in the future might lay. Have you already chosen a subject where to focus? What is that? I'm now finishing my studies so my focus is already clearly turned towards Sociology and International Relations. In the future I will probably continue studying Security issues from non-military perspectives. What are your favorite lectures/lecturers and why? Lecturers with a passion for their field combined with a high level of pedagogical tools, are the ones that usually can give highly enjoyable lectures time after time. Are you happy with the studies at SOGOLAS? Every bureaucratic institution has its own annoyances and a Liberal Arts programme doesn't save you from good and bad lectures. None-the-less, in general the wide range of international students and staff has made the studies here very enjoyable. What is the strength of SOGOLAS in your opinion? The combination of nationalities that are represented inside the university is definitely the strength of the faculty for me.  How do you like Tallinn? Why is it good to study in Tallinn? I enjoy Tallinn immensely! The city in itself has a handful of highly interesting and enjoyable parts of town that are filled with different kind of culture. The upcoming areas are always a great way to spend some time and surprisingly I've found out that it is also impossible to get bored of the Old Town. Cultural events are very often in English or subtitled so that the expat community can enjoy them. Additionally the range of speakers, especially in the field of international relations and politics, is pretty impressive. Text by Jyri Julius Jäntti  ( student).
