In this presentation we will give a brief overview of a new emerging
discipline of Situation Management. The field of situation management is
defined as a synergistic goal-directed process of monitoring, control, and
prediction of situations in dynamic systems like communication networks,
tactical military missions, and enterprise business processes, In general,
situation management includes the tasks of sensing of the dynamic system,
perception and comprehension of its behavior, and reasoning about the
situations, action planning and situation prediction. As a rule, the
management of operational situations often involves a large number of
dynamic objects that change their states in time and space, and engage each
other into fairly complex class, structural, spatial, temporal and other
domain-specific relations.
The focus of the presentation will be on conceptualization of the basic
elements of the processes of situation management. Our interest will be
mostly on cognitive (intelligent) situation management, i.e. on situation
management, which is associated with the meaning of situations, the methods
of reasoning about the situations, and actions planning. In order to
exhibit such intelligent capabilities, the situation management system
should possess fairly elaborated knowledge about the domain.  We will
introduce the main concepts of situation management, including the concepts
of situations, events, actions, behaviors and agents. The presentation
concludes with some examples of using Situation Management in enterprise
business continuity and cyber security management.
Biography
Dr. Gabriel Jakobson is VP and Chief Scientist of Altusys Corp., a
consulting company specializing in situation management technologies for
defense, cyber security and enterprise management applications. During his
more than 20 years tenure at Verizon(formerly GTE), he had increasing
responsibilities of leading advanced database, expert systems, artificial
intelligence, and telecommunication network management programs. Dr.
Jakobson has authored a monograph and over 100 technical publications, has
awarded five US patents on situation management and real-time event
correlation.
He received a PhD degree in Computer Science from the Institute of
Cybernetics, Estonia.
----------Dr. Jakobson holds Honorary Degree of Doctor Honorius Causa from
Tallinn University of Technology, and is Distinguished IEEE Lecturer. He
has given lectures and tutorials in more than 20 countries worldwide. Dr.
Jakobson is General Chair of the Conference on Cognitive Methods of
Situation Awareness and Decision Support(CogSIMA 2011-2013), chair of the
Workshop on Situation Management SIMA at MILCOM 2005-2009, TPC co-chair of
the Symposium on Selected Areas of Communication at ICC 2009-2013. Dr.
Jakobson is chair of the Tactical Communications and Operations TC of IEEE
ComSoc, chair of the IEEE ComSoc Sub-Committee on Situation Management, and
past-chair of the IEEE ComSoc TC on Enterprise Networking and Services.
