Prof. Chen Fenglan from CI hosted the Movie Night workshop with a brief introduction to the background of the story, which is based on the story of 's assassination attempt in 227 on the during The Warring States period in China. After watching the film, a heated discussion followed on the theme the story conveys, that is understanding and peace which is just the theme CI Day hoped to present at this period of time when the whole world still has quite a lot of difficulties in cross-cultural communication and finding solutions to human crises.
By the workshop, the participants had a better understanding of the swordsman spirit and his strong belief in “义” (Righteousness) in the context of Chinese culture, which was also depicted in the poem of The Swordsman by Chia Tao, a poet in Tang Dynasty:
十年磨一剑, 霜刃未曾试。
shí nián mó yījiàn, shuāng rèn wèi céng shì 。
今日把示君, 谁有不平事?
jīn rì bǎ shì jūn, shuí yǒu bú píng shì ?
As translated by J.P. Seaton:
Ten long years I’ve honed this sword:
frost white blade as yet untried.
Today, like any other gentleman,
it’s looking for injustice.
